I just did this myself three weeks ago on my 1980 Spit. I must have
spent two hours trying to accomplish it without having to do the work
of removing the tunnel cover over the tranny. I finally realized that
I could have had it done if I had just been willing to pull the cover
from the beginning. It's a snap with the cover off, and I found that
there was a bendable tab holding the old cable in place across the
top of the tranny. I had done that myself in an earlier clutch
replacement!

Do it with the cover off. The problems of snaking the new cable
down to the right place and then connecting to the right-angle drive
from underneath are formidable. Now that I think of it, my car has
the overdrive so yours could be a different connection.
