Two additional points:
1) It's referred to as the "scuttle vent". (where did the
name come from?)
2) The comment about it being the source of heated air intake
is very true. You'll get little/no heat unless you open the
vent in the winter! (You wouldn't be the first to ask this
group why your heater didn't work!)
