One meaning (there are several) of the word "scuttle" comes from the Gothic
(as in Goths) language word "skaut" meaning "seam" through Middle English
"skotel" meaning "hatchway" to modern English meaning "a) a small hatch or
port in the deck, side or bottom of a vessel b) a cover for this."  Cheers.
