Right, I thought I would remove the rubber stuff and then go with the leather
wrap on the core.  Maybe the core is too small!  That would be a major pain.

I had thought to try injecting thin super glue with a syringe into the
space between the metal core and the rubber.  But apparently similar attempts
have failed in the past.
