Overdrives re-visited.

Hi all, my wife says I can't bastardise the 79 spit engine and trans, so
I'm back trying to get educated about overdrive units.  So I have a few
questions that I hope some of you will have answers for:

1. Is it practical to modify the stock transmission to bolt up to the OD
unit?  Mine could use a couple synchros anyway.

2. Who sells salvage or rebuilt units?  I'm near Chicago if that
matters.  Is it all pot luck, or does somebody stockpile these?
