I've recently purchased a 1972 Spitfire. After towing it home and driving it
a few times, I realize I've got a shifter or transmission problem. I can't
get into second gear (it grinds like a bad synchro), even when trying to
start in second gear from a standstill. The other problem is that when
decelerating in third gear, it pops out of gear. I can keep it in third gear
by keeping pressure on the shift lever. The car has an overdrive unit and
I've been told that a replacement transmission for it would be hard to come
by. Does anybody have any suggestions before I commit to removing the
transmission for a rebuild.
