Dear Ken,
The set screw into the side of the piston is there to prevent the
needle assy from turning as you adjust the mixture screw. When you
remove this "set screw" then the whole assy will rotate as you turn
the adjusting screw. Put the set screw back in (don't drive it home
hard .. just tight enough to keep the assy from rotating) then turn the
mixture adjusting screw counter-clocwise (looking from the top end)
the screw may in fact be stuck (especially if someone tightened down on
it after pulling the needle up to its richest point) but it should break
loose with some coaxing (and perhaps some more soaking). When it starts
to turn you'll notice that the needle assy will start to back itself out
of the piston but will stop as soon as you reach the end of the threads
on the adjusting screw. At this point, if things aren't too badly
corroded, you should be able to pluck the needle assy out by hand.
Good luck.
