        Perhaps your temp gauge was inoperative.  Overheating is an urban,
suburban, and rural legend!  Consider yourself very lucky!

I had a '59 TR3 in the 1970's and as far as I can recall, it did not have a
radiator shroud. And, I never had problems with overheating. I lived in
Savannah, GA. I drove the car all over town, lived in Atlanta a couple years
and drove it there. Also drove it down to DelRay Beach, FL on the interstate
(a round trip of close to 1000 miles). Was I just lucky with no overheating?
Or is the overheating an urban legend?
