Rob, the wear is seen/felt as flattening of the little ridges in the brass
synchro rings. How much is too much? Don't know. I agree that there
is a lot of variabilty in the quality of the new ones. I had to check
SIX rings to get 4 good ones. Still had to clean up the flashing all over the
teeth of the ring.
It is "false economy" to avoid replacing the synchro rings.......

Subject: Synchro cup wear?
Hi all
My TR6 tranny and J-type OD are now in many, many pieces, and I've got the final
gaskets I need on order. Everything has been cleaned and is sparkly clean.
My question is this. Does anyone want to buy the J-type before I put it back
together?  Just kidding.  8^}
Now the real question. What does a worn synchro cup look like. I bought four
new ones through the TRF hundred grand sale but a) they look far less robust the
ones already in my tranny, and b) I don't see any wisible wear on the ones
currently in the tranny. Where does the wear take place on these? Broken/worn
teeth, the little fins on the inside on the cups worn away, something else?
