I bought a 72 Stitfire about a year ago but have driven it very little 
because of transmission troubles.  I finally removed the trans last week to 
start a rebuild, to be ready for the spring.  With the transmission out, I 
see it has been marked on the bellhousing with yellow letters "74 Spit" like 
a wrecking yard would do.  As I'm looking at what parts I'll need for the 
rebuild, I think I need to know the actual vintage of the trans, for the 
clutch parts in particular, it makes a difference.  Does anyone know a good 
way to tell what year the trans is.  It is an overdrive trans with a D-type 
unit.  On the left side of the case are these markings; in large cast numbers 
"22C2" and further forward in smaller characters "88306468" and "V3038".  Any 
help would be greatly appreciated.
