I agree with Fred, you should always read your policy rather than
relying on 'your' agent's verbal explanation. Not trying to knock
insurance agents, but they do sometimes make mistakes (we all do), and
what's written in the policy takes precedence over whatever the agent
may have told you.

However, the laws regulating insurance, and hence the insurance policies
sold, vary greatly from state to state, even from the same insurance
company. I'm not sure that a policy like Fred's is even enforceable in
California.

I do know that a California insurance company is not allowed to
posthumously cancel your coverage, or claim an accident is not covered,
because of false claims (such as yearly mileage, number and age of
drivers, etc.) made on the insurance application. (Of course, they can
still sue you for fraud, etc., but that's a different issue.)

In fact, there's some new laws coming up for vote in a few weeks, that
will require them to pay even apparently fraudulent claims. (Frankly,
I'm in favor. This seems to me to mesh nicely with "innocent until
proven guilty". And, some companies have been reputed to hide behind
the "fraudulent claim" theory to avoid paying legitimate claims. Under
the new laws, they will be forced to either pay the claim, or prove in a
court of law that it is fraudulent. But, the new laws probably won't
pass :-{# )
