When I did this, I set the static timing too, during which process I
undid the distributor clamp bolt to move it slightly. I'm sure I got the
timing right, but I now get a pinking, which I'm having trouble getting
rid of. Retarding the timing with the adjustment wheel doesn't seem to
make any difference at all.

Paul,

The static timing setting is not as accurate as the dynamic, or timing
light reading. I once set my timing on my 71 TR6 using the static setting.
After several months of poor gas milage I found the timing to be WAY off.
If you set the timing using the static method I would recommend that you
follow up checking it with a light. You might be suprised.

Good luck
