There should be specs for your particular carb in your book to adjust
this, but in general the fast idle cam should come into operation
somewhat before the jets start to move.  I like to adjust my SU H6s so I
can get a fast idle of 1800-2000 rpm (warm) without richening the
mixture.  At the knob, I get about 3/8" freeplay, then another 3/8" or
so that only speeds up the idle.
