I am looking for an effective rust stopper and Waxoyl has been suggested to
preserve steel on the Herald (obligatory LBC content :)).

I recently was given a recipe for a homemade equivalent to Waxoyl. It uses
turpentine, candle or bees wax and light machine oil. Basically, you
dissolve the wax in the turpentine and use the oil as a thinning agent.

Being an unrepentant tinker, I was wondering about using either a
penetrating oil or WD 40 as the thinning agent. It also looks like paraffin
(as used in home canning) is a cheaper, more available alternative to candle
wax. Thoughts, (from those who have reason to know :)) are always
appreciated.

I would like to keep the mixture as transparent as possible. Does anyone
know of a light machine / penetrating oil that has little or no coloration?

TIA

Ken Gano
