this problem was all about the fuel pump. One of the two valves or screens
on the bottom of the pump  had fallen out of place.                  I
reinstalled original pump with screen (or valve ) refitted correctly (not
loose) and now we go. Now also have new fuel filter and shinny chrome coil.
