Randall, Yep. Original thermostat was a skirted one. The bypass hole was
designed to allow a small amount of coolant to flow into the block and
circulate in the system until the thermostat opened. This kept the coolant
already in the system from overheating until the thermostat opened.
When the thermostat opened, the skirt moved over the bypass hole, blocking
it. Of course when the thermo was open it then allowed the maximum flow of
coolant into the system.
