tr6 rear deck

I'm about ready to weld up a new rear deck, but I am still undecided of how
to best attach the front and rear pieces together. I hate the original
design. There were only three tack welds. One on the flange that slips under
the rear piece and two on the tabs that butt together underneath. I can
understand why this area is so prone to rust. The weakest area is the
transition between the flange and the tabs. There, the two pieces join in an
unwelded butt joint. Has anyone got any ideas on how best to adjoin these
pieces? Ideas I have had are:

Weld the top of the flange joint to the edge of the deck top. This would be
covered by the convertible top.

Instead of welding the two spots on the tabs, use two bolts. This would allow
a seam sealer to be used between the tabs.

Weld the entire length of the joint along the top. This would not look
original, but would solve the problem. The VB catalogue sometimes shows a TR6
on the inside of the rear cover without the deck seams, and it looks good.
Not sure if its a photo-touch up or real, though. I know this is sacrilege in
terms of originality, but it's the way it probably should have been done.

Any other thoughts or enlightenment on the error of these ideas are
appreciated.
