Oh Jeeze.

Well whether it was my fault, or crappy materials, or some other problem . .the
end result is . . .I amazed my car is running.

I looked up in the bentley manual and found the stock cam's timing and duration
. . . but I didn't see what the cam lift (or valve stroke) is for the stock
cam. Anyone know this value?

I'm quite embarassed to admit what values I measured for my valve stroke.
As I said. . . it is amazing the car still runs (every day back and forth to
work no less)

It could very well be crappy materials.
I contacted the manufacturer of the Paeco Superlift 5700 cam installed by a
previous owner. . . many years ago . . .I'd guess back in the 80's.

Anyway . . . the specs for the cam are:
Int: 25/61 Exh: 65/21 Lift: .400"

ummm .. . .

Okay . .I'll admit it:
The VALVES aren't traveling .400" on my car!
Wouldn't that mean the cam lift is now down to less than .267"
YIKES!

My compression is still nice and even . . . and I am not aware of any terrible
bearing problems with the engine. But then again . . . a car's behaviour can
change very gradually over time and to the daily driver. . . it isn't
noticeable.

As I said . . . I have driven it with low oil.
Sometimes for long distances (say . . . 1000 mile trips in a single day heading
East from Breckenridge)

I ONCE saw the oil pressure light give a faint glow when I went around a
corner.
I immediately pulled over and added oil.

Damn . . . looks like the money flow is going to go towards the TR-6 and away
from the TR4s.

I wouldn't _think_ this would be a problem, since as long as you have oil
pressure there will be lots of oil being slung off of the crankshaft, as it
comes through the rod bearings. And if you're driving without oil pressure,
the rod bearings would probably go first <g>

Cam lobes and lifters do seem to be a common problem, especially if you make
other 'performance' improvements, but my impression is that this is more due
to poor replacement materials, and poor machining techniques, than lack of
lubrication.
