A possible explanation : flashers come in both "load sensitive" and
"non-load sensitive" versions.  The former are generally originally
supplied, because the flash rate alerts one to a failed turn signal bulb.
The latter are used on vehicles that may tow trailers/caravans as they will
continue to work properly even with the additional turn signal filaments on
the towed vehicle.  My guess would be that the one that worked properly in
Canley Girl was the latter type.  Since your friend's GT6 didn't have a load
problem, it worked fine with either flasher.

One way to test this theory, should you be so inclined, would be to remove
one of CG's turn signal bulbs, and see if the flash rate alters on that
side.  If not, you have a load-insensitive flasher (while the original was
clearly load sensitive).
