Volvo used 30W motor oil......

My Guru recommends.......(and I haven't had any trouble with it!!!).....SAE
70W80 API GL-4 Gear Oil........which satisfies the gear oil viscosity
requirements of 70W, 75W and 80, and motor oil viscosities SAE 30, 10W30 and
5W30. He uses "Red Line" Synthetic Oil, MTL, All-Synthetic Formula, Manual
Transmission-Manual Transaxle Lubricant. Don't know if that is available to
you there in Kiwi Land.......but I know 'too thick' racks havoc with trannies
and OD's.......and many shop manuals recommend it 'thick'.....( I burnt out
three British 'Daginham' (Sp?) trannys on my 1964 Ford Econoline Van, until
my Guru rebuilt it and used thinner oil.............no trouble since!!!
Ford recommended 90W??????)
