>I just got a call from my mechanic saying that my transmission was rebuilt
and OD installed. What I am debating is if I should install the
transmission
myself or have him do it. He told me that it would take 6 hours but that is
including removal of all the carpets, tunnel cover etc... I can basically
do
all that myself but was wondering if I can install the tranny myself.

Is it a straight forward install? Or are there adjustment I need to do?

Patrick, I've installed transmissions on my own but I wouldn't recommend it
to someone who hasn't done it before. If you are familiar with mating
transmissions to engines and the necessity of aligning the splines and
pilot bushings and such then you are half way there but you better have a
strong back - and a jack because you have to lift the transmission into
place, support it, align it and push it onto the engine without damaging
the clutch, the pilot bushing, the input shaft and the transmission
bearings.

I do a little meditation to get myself ready for lifting the transmission
over the sill and into the middle of the car. I use a jack to support the
transmission and I raise and lower it by increments to work at the
alignment. I put the transmission in 4th gear and rotate the output flange
in order to engage the splines.

Don't force it. Once the alignement is right it will slide right in.
Maybe not all the way but keep working at the alignment and it will go
together with only pushing. Don't try to pull it together with the bolts
althought it is OK to use bolts to keep it from sliding back apart.

But, Like Michael Ferguson said: "Get a friend, neighbor, what ever to
help." These things are heavy and you can through out a back if you are
not carefull.

Another trick is to replace one or more of the three studs in the top
center with much longer ones and use those to help line things up.

Or you can ask for an estimate to just install the transmission without any
of the carpet/interior stuff. I would think one hour at shop rate would
suffice.

Good luck

Dave
