I've never been bothered by that concept, as it is a refuge for those
who prefer masochism.
But I have wondered about an operating system that claims it's close
enough to being Mac like that most people will accept it. Why do
people rush to an imperfect imitation? Marketing! I've always wondered
about people who feel marketing form is more important than
functionality, and those unable to differentiate between the two.
Windows is the choice of 99% of the IT groups because it maintains the
impenetrable mysteries of the high priests of IT. These priests are
continually called upon to make magic that keeps the machines mere
mortals depend upon functional and holy data secure.
Make a technology sufficiently complicated and those who maintain it
will multiply in numbers and be rewarded richly as those who depend
upon them fear the consequences of system crash. Men and Women can
pour out their lives, brooding over specters of non responding systems
and data loss. Men can wear away their lives searching for the kernel
of truth they think can be found can be found in the disordered ravings
of a Microsoft marketing manager.
