first thanks to all you guys that have been responding to my inquiries on
figuring out my vibration & crunching sound problem. since there were a
number of you, it is easiest to ask more questions here and the rest of the
list gets the benefit of your knowledge. i've put the car on jackstands
(breaks my heart with such good weather out) and done an inspection. here are
the results. 1. i can pull the shifter up and down at least a 1/4" easily.
so, i have been told i need shifter bushings. 2. at the front of the
driveshaft shaft there is a part of it that is shiny, that is, it is rubbing
against the box that the shifter is bolted down into. 3. if i hold the
driveshaft in one hand and the other side of the end it is bolted to, i
cannot find any free play in trying to turn it rotationally. 4. if i grab
the driveshaft it has plenty of movement forward and backward longitudinally
and can easily be moved 'sock sock sock' sound. given that the shifter can
move up and down so easily, given that the driveshaft is rubbing against the
housing just below the shifter and given that their is no rotational play from
the driveshaft to the parts it is bolted to, do i just need shifter bushings
only ? i looked in my lousy haynes manual and did not see one word about the
shifter bushings. where are these things ? do i have to order them from out
of state ? or can i get them at the local napa, pep boys, advanced auto parts
store (meaning can i get back on the road today) ? thanks guys ! larry
