Thanks to the many people who replied to me the other day when I posted
regarding this problem for my (Standard Motor Company built) tractor.
The timing was significantly retarded. I was fooled by two red herrings:
1. The governor and throttle linkage was quite out of adjustment, causing
it to rev very fast at "idle", which led me to think the timing was too
advanced when it wasn't, and
2. The position of the distributor was the same as on my other tractor, but
it ends up not being, so I guess one of them is meshing with the cam gear a
tooth off from the other.
Problem solved, thanks again to this great group!
Jim
PS It runs beautifully! I guess the heat didn't do it in.
