TR3 Control Head

Does anyone have a trick to installing a control head on a TR3? I removed the 
old one and pulled a string through the stator tube into the center of the 
steering wheel. I tied the string onto the wires and taped them together. I 
cannot get them through the tube. I am afraid to pull too hard on the string as 
it 
might break. Any ideas?
