Thanks to several folks who responded with helpful information on how to 
know if your steering rack needs rebuilding.  This is very helpful.  I 
will probably end up sending mine out to TRF for a rebuild ($225) based on 
the principle of "as long as I have everything taken apart anyway"  and 
also just based on the fact that the rack has been in the car since 1976 
(even though it only has 55,000 miles on it).   Seems like a reasonable 
investment once every 27 years or so.  I will probably NOT go with the 
quick ratio rack ($399 from VB).  I don't have enough hard data on the 
difference (pros and cons) between it and the stock rack to justify the 
extra cost, in my humble opinion.

On the how do I know when to re-build a standard rack, a good indication 
is.....
