I phoned Herman van den Akker last night at his request and according to
him it seems that the end float is not that critical, so I'm going ahead
with assembly .004" too much end float. I know Herman is accomplished
machinist and expert TR6 transmission rebuilder and if he says it's OK,
then I'm not going to argue the point. Some of you may have met him at
TRF Summer Party. He was marketing his excellent Toyota 5-Speed
Conversion Kit.

The next time I need to replace the Layshaft needle bearings in my car I
will buy one of Herman's machined Laygears. He has the laygears worked
to fit 2 oversized needle bearings on the back side so that the stresses
are taken by two needle bearings rather than one. He claims this process
puts an end to the chronic TR6 gearbox weakness: needle bearing
disintegration resulting in ruined layshafts and possibly ruined
laygears.

Thanks for all who responded with advice and suggestions, and especially
Randall Young who put me in touch with Herman van den Akker.
