Definitely requires a special seal, which is split to allow it to fit over
the flange.  There is a coil spring that is assembled separately (the ends
hook together) and then put on the seal after the seal is installed on the
crank to hold the seal lips against the crank.  This is the spring that Jack
Drews just advised trimming to 8" before installation, which sounds like
good advice to me.
