Hey! We're here to help! (And ask questions ourselves!)

I'd strongly suggest you track down the right tool for the job. I bought a 
"clamshell" ball joint tool from one of the Big Three TR vendors a few years 
ago 
and I swear by it. I used it yesterday to release a stuck shock link taper 
fitting. It makes quick work of tie-rod ends, ball joints, etc. Great for tight 
spaces. No pounding with hammers required. 

I've looked at several websites to see if I could find a picture, with 
limited success. See www.jcwhitney.com, item #ZX881770B, $10.99. This looks 
right, 
but I'm not sure if it's the same size as the one I use. 

Simply slip it on the joint, tighten the bolt and wait for the "pop!" Okay, 
occasionally I'll tap the end of the bolt lightly with a hammer, but that's 
rarely needed.

Excuse my over-reliance on this list; but could someone tell me something?

I've only used a moderate force (so far) to hit the tie-rod-seperator and yet
the ball joint assemply doesn't want to come apart.  Should I try more force?
I'm trying to take the ball joint assembly off it's vertical link.  (Surely,
the ball joint assembly doesn't come apart, although I see a place for it to
seperate)?
