Certainly not essential, IMO, but they do seem to help stop squeaks and
prevent the straps trying to rub through the tank.  A TR actually flexes a
good deal under spirited driving, so the tank 'works' against the body.

Same thing, it forms a somewhat flexible mount for the tank.

Don't know if they still sell it, but Home Depot used to sell synthetic felt
weather-stripping that made a good substitute for the original felt on my
TR3A.  You can also order it from MMC :
