Hi Chuck,
The six mounting screws are all that were ever used on TR4/4A gas tanks. No
straps. The TR fuel tank is pretty rigid construction. I don't see where any
straps would add significant support.
If you are concerned about just fiberboard separating the passenger
compartment, it's possible to make up an aluminum panel in place of the
fiberboard. It
could be powdercoated black and would look about the same. This is a common
safety requirement by many racing organizations.
Personally, in a small car like the TR4/4A I'd much prefer the gas tank
situated as it is: centralized in the car, instead of under the trunk and
between
the frame rails as it is on many other cars. I think the lower and more
rearward tank is much more vulnerable in an accident.
On the other hand, some years ago when a drunk in a pickup truck rear-ended
my TR4, the righthand mounting bracket skewered the side of the tank as the
right inner fender folded during the impact. Fortunately, the fuel level was
low
enough that there was no spill. There was a strong odor of gas, though!

Thanks all, for the suggestions re. the felt and insulation question...and
then... When i pulled the gas tank there were no mounting straps. It was
attached with only the six screws into the frame. (it was bad enough to find
out that
there is pretty much nothing between the tank and the occupants except some
fiberboard, and now.. that the tank is possibly not secured as well as it
should be? ...) Would anyone have more info on these straps?
