Simply because the car had no visible leaks, does not mean that the shop
was giving you false information. If you have a bad head gasket, that
leaks into the cylinder under pressure, then you indeed will loose coolant,
but won't see it on the ground or outside the engine. A simple way to tell
is to look at the plugs. Usually if there is a leak of this type, the
cylinder (or cylinders) that are affected will look markedly different than
the rest - since its basically getting water injection. With this type of
leak, it may take a while to notice that your coolant level is dropping.
The sure way to tell is to check the coolant system to see if it holds
pressure.
