Chassis Number

In the Original Triumph TR2/3/3A, Bill Piggott states that the chassis  
number "...has no know significance."  Has anyone found out  different?  It's 
hard 
for me to believe that, though the cost would be  minimal, a company would pay 
to have a plate embossed with a Z and stamped  with a number for no reason.
 
By the way, mine is Z 31, how many different numbers are there?
