[TR] TR6 - scraping carbon off pistons?

Can anyone explain why the Bentley manual says to leave a small ring on the
outer edge of the pistons when you de-carbon them?  There must be some good
reason since they went into detail (which is unlike Bentley) about this and
provided an explicit photo too.  Also, is the reason still viable these many
years later given advances (or so I assume) in the equipment such as rings,
head gaskets, etc.?
