List,
One last engine question. I have a problem with my TR4A engine fan
extension. When I installed my crankshaft pulley and fan extension, I
started it in the keyway of the crankshaft and used the big bolt on the end
to cinch it up. The problem is that the bolt is tight and the pully is
about 5/16ths to 3/8ths of an inch or so from being inserted all the way
into the timing cover oil seal. I posted some pictures on the engine page of
my restoration http://home.fuse.net/davestr4a
I could just grind off some of the threaded end of the bolt I guess but I
don't really know if that is the problem or maybe I have the wrong fan
extension. I seem to remember that there are different versions (lengths) of
the fan extension.
My bolt length is 6-3/16ths, my fan extension is 3-3/4" long. Like I said, I
don't have an easy way of confirming the actual problem as the car is
completely apart so I can't see where the fan is in relation to the
radiator. If one of you TR4A owners could confirm that the length of your
fan extension is 3-3/4" long, then I will just cut down the bolt I have. If
the fan extension is too short then I need to find a proper extension.
I guess I could also solve this by purchasing a narrow belt conversion. I
noticed in my new Moss catalog that they had a narrow belt conversion that
included a dampened crankshaft pulley for about $250.00. The dampened
crankshaft pulley sounds interesting. Anybody have any thoughts on them in
terms of reducing the dreaded crankshaft harmonic flexing? I think I will
call Moss to see what they have to say about the conversion. The problem
with the conversion is that I would need a electric fan. An electric fan
means I need a alternator. Does it ever end?
Thanks,
Dave Connitt
