Thanks to everyone's advise, I persevered. As Chris suggested, I inspected
the distributor and discovered that the plate was all gummed up
so that the vacuum advance apparently needed to exert extra force to do its
part in achieving the advance curve. Also, I did not have a good seal where
the vacuum advance pipe enters the carb. Now the machine runs as it should -
very strong.
On the overdrive.....
