John, I am a union member now. They aren't asking for the "maximum for the 
minimum" for me. They are trying to expand their base by protecting jobs 
that are not worth doing, they are looking for benefits for people that 
haven't even been hired, they are fighting for work rules I would be just as 
happy without.  I, personally, and most of the pople I work with, am quite 
happy giving more than the minimum for the wages we receive, I don't want 
the union dumbing down my job, but they do. Oh, I could quit the union, but 
I would still have to pay rather healthy dues.

Your statement that management is at fault for agreeing to union demands 
implies a balanced, fair market. It isn't. It suggests that management could 
make decisions on what to accept or reject in union contracts based on the 
economic impact alone. They can't. Union members can always quite their job 
and go find another. Management can't go hire a non-union worker.  Sometimes 
there just are no good choices.
