Just a suggestion, when cleaning an engine bay, it is a nice prevention to put 
a plastic supermarket bag over the distributor, voltage regulator, coil, and 
generator/alternator.  Probably you're safe without it, but especially the 
distributor is a good idea.

OTH, I asked for the List's advice about cleaning the engine bay of salt and 
dirt on modern cars.  The List seemed to think soap and spray with no 
precautions would work because electronics in modern engine bays are 
watertight.  Shut my eyes and crossed my fingers, then tried it.  They were 
right.
