I just wanted to follow up on this.  I installed by new Mallory  
distributor with the Pertronix, and it did indeed work like a points  
system in using a voltmeter/test light.  But I also found that there  
was an audible click when it switched on/off as well (relay in the  
unit?), so the test light is just needed to make sure you are on  
right transition, the exact spot can be set with the click.
