Knurling a shaft that is a loose press fit or making random  center punch 
marks on the OD of a bushing that is a little loose are old machinists 
tricks that would get you fired in the shop that I worked in back in the 
60s.  Now, it appears, it is a valid production technique!  I will make my 
own assumption as to the source of the pumps Randall refers to...
