This IS in top gear, right ?  If it only happens in one gear, OTHER THAN 
4th, it might be the transmission.  A missing tooth in a gear will cause a 
tick-tick-tick sound, but only when that gear is driving.

As long as your ticking is in 4th gear, it's not a gear in the transmission 
making the noise, but it could still be a main transmission bearing (though 
that would be unlikely to just cause a tick-tick-tick).  In top gear the 
gears in the transmission are just idling - the mainshaft is locked and the 
transmission is driving directly from input shaft to mainshaft.
