John, it's one of those peculiar 'Brit-isms'. We call the propellant you put in
the tank, petrol (not fuel) but the term petrol gauge lost favour after WW2 to
fuel gauge. As for the spelling, put it down to the possibility of the person
who composed the typesetter for label printing was a bit dyslexic?

In its own way this continues the Standard Triumph Confusion Programme such as
the Toledo with two doors on one side and one on the other, the Herald with a
LH instrument panel but a RH pedal layout and the Spitfire with wires on the
front, discs on the back and one of each in the boot for a spare. There are
lovely stories associated with these occurrences but it's now difficult to
relate them as they are claimed by women to be offensive.

Here is the box for an original TR Smiths petrol gauge. Note that the box is
labelled FUEL not PETROL even though the TR parts catalog calls it a petrol
gauge. The spelling for gauge is also unique.
