There was recently a discussion about this at:

The answer at that site was that you do need to use an oil cooler, even
with synthetics. The average oil temp will continue to climb during a race
session. Internally the engine spot heats the oil, and as the average temp
climbs this spot heating will eventually go beyond the failure point, so
you need to keep the average oil temp under control.
The biggest advantage of a synthetic for you is not that can withstand a
higher operating temp, it's that it will flow a lot more freely through
your long oil lines to the front oil tank, and eliminate, or really reduce
cavitation.
