I developed total dedicated admiration for flaggers one day long ago at an
SCCA race at Mansfield, Lousiana. Toward the end of a long race I was
running 2nd or 3rd in the formula vee race but we were all strung out and
the car ahead of me was 300 yards up the track. I was in a fast sweeping
turn and I noticed all the flaggers from two corners running together and
they seemed to be dancing and hugging each other! What the 'ell! After
the race, I found out that a flimsy communications wire pole had broken and
the wire was dangling about neck-high across the track as I arrived. The
workers converged on the pole and held the wire up 'til the field got by . .
I bought a lot of beer that night!
