The can be pulled with the tranny attached (I've done it) or it must be pulled by unbolting at the bell/engine interface. CNA

The best way to avoid this (with motor & trans together) is to get the car onto ramps first. Then the motor & trans can be angled downward as you pull it out to avoid damage. The only problem is you
