Let me suggest that you not trust wood under the pressure of the springs involved. You'd be far better just using the suggested large washer(s) at the top and a piece of bar stock, metal plate, etc

story about clutch stuck to flywheel after sitting through the winter deleted...... Short of excersizing the clutch periodically I can't think of anything that doesn't have other posible side effect

I don't think the clutch "sticking" to the flywheel is a function of rust. It's more likly a glue-like effect of dried lubricants and other "stuff" that finds its way into the area of the clutch and
