While it is an excellent idea the engineering and fabrication needed to do the conversion would be more than the $900 it currently costs for the timing chain stuff. The chains are easy to get made,

Been done, at least on one wild and crazy Roadster. I saw the car at Shasta, and although I don't know if it's the only way to do it, the front of the head was cut off and the timing belts were expos
