White smoke may not be a good sign, as the white aspect is quite possibly steam, made from water in the coolant....check this out: do you have any oil under your rad cap? Is there any coolant in you

If by "diminishes" you mean it goes away completely then it could be the oil in the carburetor dampers is leaking when it sits. Do you have to top up the oil in the dampers frequently? If so, then th

I assume that the reference is to adding oil to the top of the carburetors where the plastic knobbed dipstick is. How do you know if enough oil is in there and what type oil belongs in there? Thanks,

You are correct. As far as I know, the recommended fluid is SAE 30 oil. I have seen one note on the list that suggested transmission fluid to get quicker response from the carburetor. I have not trie

I doubt there's enough oil in the dampers to cause the smoke you're seeing. Like Russ indicated, it's probably bad valve guides in the head (or other serious problems like a crack). With the carb dam

Original message stated "whitish blue exhaust " which kind of left it open to either. Since it also stated it was on start-up after sitting it reminded me of the symptoms I had when my carburetor sea

Hi everyone, Thank you for your responses. I leaned out the carbs and that helped the start up problem and lessened the darkness of the exhaust somewhat but the exhaust still is whitish. I put my fin

I think you may want to perform a compression test before you pull the head. That would at least help rule out other likely problems. Sounds like you could have an oil ring out on one of your piston

One other thing you might want to try is to do is crude "cylinder leakdown" test. With some basic air hose parts and a compression gauge you can pressurize the cylinders. Then see how long it takes f
