I have watched a 1" thick steel spiral wound 80"dia. pipe being welded in a single continuous pass with a Lincoln idealarc submerged arc 1/8th dia.wire feed (mig). everything has good and bad points.

I second LArry Mac's note. The most complaints are that the bead looks good, but has no penetration. It just lays on top of the metals being joined and while looking good is failure bound. I too like
I suspect one other thing some people dislike about stick welding is the large slag buildup. Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ --Original Message-- From: owner-land-speed@autox.team.net [mailto:owner-land-sp
Exactly..I agree 100% I suspect one other thing some people dislike about stick welding is the large slag buildup. Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ i think welding choice is based on, application, cost, abil
I always thought there are good welder operators and some that are not. seems like a lot of things were made before a tig welder was invented.. I am willing to bet there are a lot of stick welders th
What percentage penetration is optimum, is there a correct weld prep? The nuke pipe example sounds perfect. Bradley tanks are 11/2"-3"alum. miged, except the ones I made, which were wood. jack
Jack, did they shoot wood bullets at your wood tank? As to weld prep, for butt welds, need to be "v" out to something like a rod diameter at the bottom of the weld? Then make multiple passes to refil
The most incredible welding I've ever seen is on the sides of a Ford V8-60 block. It looks like a zipper it is so uniform. And those welds were done with stick welders long before Tig and Mig were bo
"Seems like welding is like religion, politics and oil!" Jack I rarely disagree with you Jack but it ain't religion. Welding is a SKILL that requires manipulative dexterity and knowledge. Religion is
And wire brushes! I only took 2 years of welding when I was in high school, and probably haven't welded anything else in years, but when I was welding regularly I could do a hell of a job with good o
Submerged arc is like stick with a wire. It uses a powdered flux to shield the arc from contaminates. The arc melts all the flux that it needs and the rest is vaccumed up and put back in the hopper
Prototype person, production auto. I once suggested the tanks be made of cardboard, and let 20 guys run with it, that way 19 expensive missiles could go right through leaving one guy still running. B
Or possibly he was grandfathered in when you had to be certified. A lot of people in a lot of trades are not as good as you might expect compared to some of the ones that had to pass testing in order
