I have watched a 1" thick steel spiral wound 80"dia. pipe being welded in a single continuous pass with a Lincoln idealarc submerged arc 1/8th dia.wire feed (mig). everything has good and bad points.

I second LArry Mac's note. The most complaints are that the bead looks good, but has no penetration. It just lays on top of the metals being joined and while looking good is failure bound. I too like

What percentage penetration is optimum, is there a correct weld prep? The nuke pipe example sounds perfect. Bradley tanks are 11/2"-3"alum. miged, except the ones I made, which were wood. jack

Jack, did they shoot wood bullets at your wood tank? As to weld prep, for butt welds, need to be "v" out to something like a rod diameter at the bottom of the weld? Then make multiple passes to refil

Submerged arc is like stick with a wire. It uses a powdered flux to shield the arc from contaminates. The arc melts all the flux that it needs and the rest is vaccumed up and put back in the hopper

Prototype person, production auto. I once suggested the tanks be made of cardboard, and let 20 guys run with it, that way 19 expensive missiles could go right through leaving one guy still running. B
