The white circuit runs through the tach to the coil primary. IOW, the tach is in series with the coil and points, so when you pull off a white wire it's the same as turning off the ignition switch. T

The tachometer drive gear at the generator has a inner cable that is a part of the gear that will break. That is probably the bits that you discovered. Best bet is to replace the tach drive gearbox.
